Swaddle me this... Vol.4 : the sleep saga

Yup, I'm still writing about swaddling. 2 weeks ago I thought it was the biggest mistake I've made with Zoe so far. Obviously I wrapped her so tightly from day dot that she refused to sleep unswaddled and I've been so frustrated about it ever since. Thinking 'holy crap my kid might need to be wrapped forever!' haha

It is sticky and hot here at the moment and I was wrapping Zoe in a Snug & Tug wrap at nights, and her Wrap Me Up during the day. But at night time she was just too hot and would take hours to settle. I decided I would stick her in her Wrap Me Up suit and just get up to her a million times a night as she wakes so frequently in it. But, she hardly woke at all and settles much faster, so yay! There goes the heat problem as the suit is light and doesn't over-heat her, it enables her to have her hands up instead of pinned down at her sides. She sucks her hands through the suit to self-soothe which is great, the only downside is that the fabric at the hands gets gross so I am forever throwing it in the wash. But I can not recommend this suit enough for people that can relate to this post, I feel like it has been a life-saver.

Wrap Me Up suit in action. In this last picture, I'm starting to find Zoe all over this end of the cot now!

I went to a sleep course at The Parenting Place run by Louise from The Sleep Store last week and it was FANTASTIC. I kinda thought she would tell me to dream feed, and she did, and so now I am... I just persevered and it's paid off as Zoe's sleeps have been much better. (Past attempts at dream feeding just woke Zoe up completely and then again every 3 hours). But she also said that Zoe would be ready to sleep with one arm out around 5 months, and that she will fall asleep like that when she is ready. If she is taking forever to get to sleep and won't settle - she isn't ready.

Well I tried it.. and 20 mins later.... asleep! I couldn't believe it! She takes a while to settle, as she is busy talking and cooing to herself but she eventually gets there. I really didn't think it was going to be this easy. I've even let her sleep with one arm out during the night - in which she slept 6 hours in a row. I think having her hand there is comforting and O.K now that it's not constantly hitting her in her face without her permission.

I've bought her a sleeping bag as that is the next step in this sleeping drama. At the moment I just have her in the Wrap Me Up done up under her arm and it seems to be working wonderfully. I'm not sure when to let the other arm loose though.. mmm...

Zoe has also decided not to wake for the dummy at night anymore, well, when I try to put it in she goes NUTS! and only wants food. But only wakes that one time hungry, and that is a big change. She uses the dummy to calm down at the initial shock when placed in her cot, spits it out and then continues to pet her 'pinky' comfort blanket - of which she ADORES all of a sudden.

Wrap Me Up suit with one arm out & Zoe with her pinky blankie.

Now a question for other mothers out there, did your children use a comforter blankie? Were you worried they would pull it over their head and suffocate!?! I'm not sure if it is O.K to have it in bed with her and have sewed on a piece of ribbon so that I can tie one end to the cot far enough away so that it can't be pulled up over her head. Anyone else have any issues with these? Would love to hear from you!

All in all, swaddling is quickly becoming something of the past and of course I worried for nothing and just needed some patience! (and many of you are rolling your eyes right now thinking, 'I told you so'...).

Bring on sleeping bag only with both arms unwrapped!

A Creation a Week for a Year: No.8

This isn't really a fully fledged 'creation' this week as our household has been sick with a ruddy old cold so it has been impossible to do anything!

But here goes... this week I found an old skirt in my fabric box that I was keeping for the denim. I lopped off the bottom, sewed around the hem and frayed the edge. I then chucked it in the wash so that the fraying would fray more and look good... and that's pretty much it.

Plus I had fun taking this photo and making it pretty :-)

Since having Zoe, I have lost heaps of weight and going shopping only 3 months after her birth was a mistake. I don't fit any of those clothes I bought anymore! I'm kinda pissed but kinda happy as I'll have to go and buy some replacements in a size smaller. I'm the smallest I've been in forever, as I'm usually a good 8kg heavier. **insert smug emoticon here** eeeee!

Thank you all so much for the lovely comments on last week's creation... watch this space!

Things I Love Thursday

I haven't done a TILT (Things I Love Thursday) since a few times when I first started blogging, which seems like forever... so here goes...

1. Debra's Marrow Chutney.
Yup Chutney. So simple, yet so underrated! I've never been this obsessed with my lunch and whether or not it includes the sweet nectar that is chutney. I can't get enough of this homemade delicacy, I've eaten it almost every day since I was given the blessed jar. Debra has another one waiting for me and she said it was a 'big' jar - so now I can't wait because the store bought beetroot chutney just isn't cutting it! Above is a photo of my salad sandwich that I just can't stop making (yes I took a photo of the blimmin thing!).

2. My Husband.
Yes of course it's cheesey but I love him and I just wanted to add him on here because he is cool. He has been an extra big help this week since we were all sick and I've been really wasted and tired. Always good to have a man around town who knows what he is doing. I feel like I spend most of my time snapping at him. But he is really good at turning the 'wife volume' button down in his head when needed and doesn't ever get pissed at me. Here he is at Waihi beach...

3. The Big Bang Theory.
Don't really need an explanation for this, we all know it's super cool.

4. Choosing, buying, making and wrapping birthday presents.
It's Gina & Dad's birthday on Friday and I've been thinking about gifts for them for ages. I'm a gift giver and I LOVE giving gifts. I think I get a bigger kick out of it than the recipients. I just love thinking about a gift, going to buy it or making it, then searching for the perfect little pieces to add - to make it extra special. Linzi knows what I am talking about! This week I got to do this for 2 people. Although Dad didn't want much, he's still getting a little something and hopefully Gina likes her stash :-). I couldn't exactly add a photo of her present, so here is a sneak peek...

Pop's Magical Tree

I just had to post about this. Every time we go and see my Granny & Pop we have to go down to the garden and check out their magical tree.

See these apples...

...they all come from this one tree!!

It's called an Espalier, where Pop has grafted different varieties of Apple onto the one tree! Now of course, I'm no horticultural expert, in fact I don't know the first thing about plants. BUT I know this tree is awesome! I've never seen this done before and it truly boggles my mind when I look at it. He has trained a different variety of Apple down each branch and intends it to grow the length of his back fence, that is about 2 metres outwards each side of the tree. It's like some crazy fruit salad magical tree. Cool huh?!

Here are the magical fruit tree growers who also have in the same garden, over 100 different Fuchsia Plants!

FaerySarah - Summer MixTape

I feel so out of touch now that I'm at home all the time, especially with new music. The other day I went looking through iTunes and soon enough I had a collection of new songs to keep me going for the rest of the summer. After each purchase the site recommended another new artist I'd never heard (and some that I had) and woops! click went the mouse and into my music library it went... hehe.

1. You've Got the Love, Florence + The Machine
2. We Won't Run, Sarah Blasko
3. More to Luv, Minnutes
4. Lucky, Kat Edmonson
5. Jungle Drum, Emiliana Torrini
6. Daniel, Bat for Lashes
7. Believer, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra
8. Awake My Soul, Mumford & Sons
9. A-Punk, Vampire Weekend
10. Giving Up, Ingrid Michaelson

At an old work, every friday @ 3pm for who knows how long, each employee (there were only 7 of us) would add 3 mp3's into a shared folder on the server to go into a 'soundtrack' for the week. Usually there was a theme and we even designed the CD covers! When I left, they made a 'Songs for Sarah' album :-).

Looking good...

Zoe and I went out shopping this morning and after finding out that my beloved boots are sold out around the country in my size (GRR), I decided to spend all my budget on Zoe. SO much fun! I wanted to get some more girly things, lets hope Marby approves. Here are some pics of her sporting her new gear, note the gradual sliding to the side pose - haha.

Of course there were plenty more outfits but Zo hates me putting her clothes on, cries most times. This time around she wasn't so bad - maybe she likes brand new clothes only!

Baby stuff is so cheap - I got her a denim dress, 2x skirts, 1 grey onesie, floral top, 2x leggings, pink sparkly shirt dress, frilly pants, red/white striped dress, 2 mum2mum bibs and a teething ring all for under $200!

There were sales on everywhere and just as I'd spent all my dosh, I went into Farmers to find baby clothing for only $5. I shut my eyes and ran the other way! And of course silly me got home to find I'd picked out one item one size too small.. I'm sure the coat hanger said '00' yet it's a '000' on the label... GRR again! Zoe can fit it, its just not going to fit for long! (this happened last time I did a big shop for her *slaps own forehead*.

ooh! and I finally got her name engraved into my Maternity Ring, so now it's extra special. Oh and only has room for ONE more name...

Wild Things

I came across Black Swan Designs last week and love everything this talented artist creates! Mel Bowles is truly amazing! While I was checking out her jewellery, her website showcases her beautiful photography and digital art.

Now this was seriously jaw dropping.. she has completely re-created the entire 'Where The Wild Things Are' book's illustrations by compiling many digital photos styled and manipulated in photoshop. Check out the one below, you'd be hard pressed to make out that each element comes from a photo she has taken, it looks hand done! Go and check it out here NOW, scroll through these amazing artworks and at the end check out all the different photographs she used to create the images. Like I said, jaw dropping!

This week I made Sushi!

I've always wanted to make my own Sushi and since I received a starter pack from J's grandparents for xmas I thought I'd get to work. The pack contained the nori, wasabi, soy sauce, rice vinegar mix and a bamboo mat. I went to town and churned out what seemed like 50 billion pieces of Sushi, but I don't mind I will eat them all! ALLLLLLL I tell you!

I made a tuna, mayo and minced onion mix for the centre and I think next time I'll try chicken and avocado. The tuna and mayo was an easy cheap filling incase it all turned to custard. It just so happens to be my favourite filling so I'm stoked they worked out ok. I might need to put more of the rice vinegar mix in next time for more flavour and maybe work on the rolling so their shape actually turns out more circular.

As my Dad would say... YUMMO!

Mummy Watch

After reading on Li'l Magoolie about Breo Sports Watches, I got one! This was after Joel got a dud replica off trademe that didn't live up to its advertised waterproof specs (the fact that it flashed 'hello' 'hello' 'hello' was our first clue something wasn't quite right!).

I'm not surfing every other weekend or actually participating in anything remotely sporty like Joel but just as Maddie said in her post - it's the perfect Mummy watch too! My other watch has been getting plastered with all sorts of baby related liquids so this watch is perfect for my new lifestyle. Oh and it looks cool too...

I grabbed the white and Joel has the nifty neon orange. $25 on sale at Rebel Sport.

Uncles are the best!

Yesterday we went to Hamilton to watch Zoe's Uncle Dean play drums at church, and of course he was awesome as usual and didn't miss a beat (*cough* really bad pun *cough*)! It's always wonderful catching up with Dean and Zoe had such a good time she started to giggle and laugh (this was a first). I practically balled my eyes out with joy at her cuteness... I couldn't help it! It was such a cool sound. It's been a week of milestones as she also hit 4 months AND rolled over the next day. eeee!

I caught some giggles on camera...

We love you Deano!

A Creation a Week for a Year: No.5

Wow it's Feb already and I've continued to make something a week for 5 weeks. There's going to be a lot of handmade stuff in this house come December! (don't tell J - he hates clutter!)

Using some more of my Mum's Laura Ashley fabric I acquired while at her place at xmas I've made a baby sling. I know I'm kinda late at the old sling thing, but I'd been meaning to make one for ages and only really got around to doing it.

I used the tutorial from Karma Baby here for anybody who is interested in making one too. It was super easy and took no time at all and they have a measurement table on their site so you can work out the perfect size so that it will fit your body shape perfectly.

I used it at church on Sunday and although it worked, Zoe is just 8kgs too heavy! While standing most of the time and rocking her back and forth (I used it to help her sleep in my arms so I wouldn't need to bring the buggy in) it munted my shoulder and I've had sore shoulder and neck muscles for days since... ooouch!! But it was handy none-the-less, I'm just a big weakling.

I think it will be good just to have it as an option for carrying her and soon I'll be able to use it in the hip-position anyway. It was also good using the extra fabric in the sling to hide Zoe's face while she semi-lay down in it to sleep, meaning less visual distraction for her while drifting off.

I love it when you win stuff that's actually cool!

I won Kindling, a book of pull out prints by illustrator James Jean last week and it arrived yesterday! All I had to do was comment on the competition post on the pro-design website of which I read about on Twitter (I wasn't that into Twitter until now!).

My favourite prints are these ones here... awesome!

Munchie Update: 4 Months

The Zo is 4 months today! Here she is, my little chub-monkey.

Snippets:
  • Zo is a wonderfully content and happy little bubba, she smiles heaps now and I have had many comments about how content she is.
  • She hasn't been weighed for a wee bit but a couple of weeks ago she was about 7.8kg so she could be around the 8kg mark now. She is getting rather heavy to hold and I'm developing muscles in my arms that I never knew existed.
  • She loves her Jolly Jumper and her Exersaucer in which she gets to play in each day for exercise (ok ok I'm just trying to wear her out a bit for a better nights sleep - it's working!).
  • Speaking of sleep, we've been back into our routine for 2 weeks now and Zo is thriving. Her sleep patterns throughout the night are getting longer and longer with a big 9 hour stretch recently. Otherwise she has been going from 6 to waking anywhere between 12-3am and then again around 6am. We are getting there!
  • I have only a couple of outfits left that actually fit her and badly need to go shopping for some more clothes. I'm contemplating getting some skirts and and more girly onesizes so she will be extra cute.
  • Her blue eyes are getting lighter and lighter and her hair is still a mystery. I think she will be Strawberry Blonde but I have family betting on Ginger or Snowy White.. still not enough hair to work that one out yet.
  • Her tummy time is getting better and better and she has made movements like she is about to roll over but not yet, any day now.
  • She talks a lot, coos, ooos, aahs, and heaps of squeals. I can get her to talk on demand if I ooh and gah at her.. no giggles yet but lots of smiles.
  • She has her hand in her mouth 95% of the day. Drools alot and likes to spit up - I swear it's her favourite thing to do these days! haha she's a pro at it.
She gets covered in kisses everyday and is loved so much by her whole family. She is a lucky girl!

The Great Strawberry Birthmark Debacle

{Warning: This post and the pictures are gross, make sure you don't mind pus!}

Zoe developed a strawberry birthmark which ulcerated a couple of days after she was born. We had no idea it would be so much trouble, and we had no idea that there would be next to no information (in NZ) or on the internet. So I'm writing about our experience with this type of ulcerated birthmark in the hopes that it puts some 'dumbed-down' straight forward REAL info out there for worried parents.

Strawberry Birthmark aka; Capillary Haemangioma, Capillary Naevus, Strawberry Haemangioma, Strawberry Naevus.

What is it? A red bubbly birthmark usually located on the head or neck area, more common in girls. It develops approx 3 days after birth, grows to 80% of its maximum size in the first 3 months and can keep growing for up to 18 months (most stop at 5 though) and can take as long as 3-10 years to go away completely. Up to 5-25% can become ulcerated, get infected and can leave a small scar. The majority of these types of birthmarks don't need treatment but marks that are located on the face, eyes/nose/mouth area could need laser treatment or even surgery!

This is the best website for information on these birthmarks: www.dermnetnz.org.

Around Christmas Zoe's mark doubled in size and ulcerated leaving an icky sore and scab. It is located on the back of her neck on the right, just in that annoying crease where her head meets her neck/shoulder area. Her clothes rubbed it raw and it got infected.

I took her to my GP who then sent us to Starship Childrens Hospital, where we spent a good chunk of 2 days waiting to see someone that could help. 6 different Doctors and Nurses saw Zoe and had never seen a birthmark ulcerate like hers before. It was SO frustrating. We were so stressed and so annoyed that no one could help. We were told we were going to have to wait a month to see a specialist because of the time of year, and to just wait to be contacted. All information was so vague, we had no idea what was going to happen - if anything.

Along came Christmas and we decided to see if the local Doctor in Katikati could help as we were down there for the holidays. She too hadn't seen this ulcerated type of mark before but prescribed antibiotics as she thought it looked infected. Because of the holidays the test results of the swab my GP took didn't get to us until later on which did indeed show a high level of infection.

The medicine had to be taken on an empty stomach, which is super hard with a baby! Zoe was on a snack (medicine), play, eat, play, sleep routine as we had to add the medicine to breast milk for her to take it, then wait 1 hour before she could actually feed. It was really hard work and threw her feed/play/sleep routine out the window (I've spent the last couple of weeks getting her back on track). She threw up her feeds a few times and it made her pretty grumpy.

We then had a nurse come each day and redress the wound (some quite poorly - it was a different nurse every time, we had to explain it every day - it was so exhausting) until Joel told them to no longer come over. We both knew we could do a better job of dressing it ourselves so we did (the sticky tape used just ripped Zoe's skin off and made things worse, even the alcohol based wipes that were needed to dissolve the tape just ate at her skin!). Joel worked out a dressing with the least amount of horrible sticky stuff and it worked a treat.

After a couple of weeks and clear slow healing of the wound, we bypassed the public health system and forked out some cash to see a private Pediatric Dermatologist (we did get a specialist appointment at Starship that same day but after waiting for an hour we bailed as we didn't want to miss both appointments). It was great! Finally someone who'd seen a mark like this before, who'd in fact seen plenty. FINALLY. He reassured us that laser treatment or surgery was not necessary, its bark is worse than its bite and that it will eventually go away. The best medicine is time and care. It was what we wanted to hear and we were really pleased. He gave us some solution to cleanse her bath water and some cream incase it looks to ulcerate again (fingers crossed it just disappears one day instead).

It was really very stressful for us as new parents. We were so worried that our little girl would need surgery, need to be put under and this giant thing cut out of her precious body. It seemed so huge at the time, but it doesn't bother her, it doesn't hurt her and we just put a light dressing on it to keep her clothes from rubbing it and it works wonderfully. As you can see from previous posts - she is a happy bubba so no problem there!

These photos were taken over time showing the growth, infection and healing. Yeah they are pretty gross and sore looking! eeeep!

17/12/09: first signs of it ulcerating and getting bumpy, 31/12/09: infected, 3/1/2010: starting to clear up and smooth out.

5/1/2010: small wound left, 7/1/2010: getting better and better, 12/1/2010 drying right up.

28/1/2010: This is how it is now, skin clear around the mark, still large though but skin all intact and cleared up. No scab or broken skin. You can see it better in the first pic in relation to her body and size.

I hope this (long) post has helped someone out there dealing with the same thing. If your child has experienced an ulcerated birthmark please write to me and let me know your story here.
